Our Local Offer

Harrington Nursery School is an 'OUTSTANDING' 80 place school which offers flexible facilities for children between 3-4 years old.  We are set in Derby City and are easily accessible on Harrington Street.  Due to being located on a busy residential street we do not have parking facilities for parents but street parking is available.  We have an enclosed garden area where our children engage in outdoor learning through a rich play based curriculum.  Here at Harrington Nursery School we strongly value every opportunity to work in partnership with the whole school community.

We are a single level site with wide entrances, sloped paths into our garden areas and an accessible private changing area.  We have a wall mounted changing table for children with additional personal care needs.  We use a minibus service for trips to the local and surrounding areas with removable seats suitable for securing a specialist pushchair or wheelchair.  We also have a stimulating sensory room containing specialist equipment designed for children with SEND.  Children utilise this area for focused work, sensory development and as a quiet 'calming' space if needed.

At Harrington Nursery School, we are committed to offering an inclusive curriculum to ensure the best possible progress for all of our children whatever their needs or abilities.  Our educational aims for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities are the same as those for all children in the school.

Harrington Nursery School strives to be an inclusive school, developing a sense of community through an inclusive ethos, setting suitable learning challenges, responding to children's diverse learning needs and overcoming potential barriers to learning.  We differentiate teaching and learning to suit the needs of the individual child.  Risk assessments / personal evacuation plans will be written and shared with parents should they be needed.  We work closely with local authority specialist teachers from StePs when a child has a specific need such as a hearing impairment, visual impairment or Autism; we also work with the Educational Psychologists when their advice is needed.

Information:

Children are identified as having Special Educational Needs if their progress has slowed or stopped and the interventions and resources put in place do not enable improvement.  Once this occurs, we have specific target setting plans which help to support their development and accelerate progress.  At this point the child is listed on a 'SEND register'.  The child's family will be invited to discuss support and review targets regularly throughout the year with the SENDCO.  Good special needs practice is good practice for all children, which is of utmost importance as any pupil may encounter difficulties at some stage in their school lives.

Sometimes families can be concerned about their child being added to this register; please do not be.  It is simply a record of which children acquire additional support and allow the Special Educational Needs Coordinator to ensure that resources are allocated appropriately and to enable support to be sought from additional outside agencies, such as an Educational Psychologist, Child & Family Support Worker or Speech & Language Therapist.

A number of staff have had training on supporting pupils with additional needs including those with complex medical needs.  We also have experience in the following areas: ADHD, ASD, Hearing, Visual and Physical impairments and work closely with the StePs team.  We use Makaton signing and are fully qualified in First Aid and have undertaken medical training when a child's needs require this.

We also have a transition co-ordinator who leads on supporting children when they start or leave our setting, this includes visits by staff and children, including additional visits for those who require them as well as sharing information with other settings.

As children progress, they may be taken off the register at a future point when their needs no longer require additional support.

We have the following special provision;

  • Flat access to rear outdoor areas and entrance halls
  • Sensory room
  • Changing facilities - shower, changing table, nappy dispenser
  • Nest swing suitable for all users
  • Provision for differing diets, for example gluten free, vegetarian, cultural/religious requirements
